Looking in the future with Naseera Omarjee

Optometrist Naseera Omarjee

1. Who is Naseera Omarjee? Where are you from and what has been your journey?

I hail from the lively suburb of Auckland Park, surrounded by the vibrant student life of 2 universities. I completed my Optometry degree at UJ and thereafter relocated to the city of Oxford in the UK. My time abroad gave me a juxtaposed view of life in SA and equipped me with a broader world view and deeper line of sight both personally and professionally.

2. Optometry is a really specialized profession, what made you pursue this career?

As far back as I can remember, I have always been fascinated with the eye. Apart from the technical, the profession also allows me to pursue the human element of correcting vision and enhancing sight - arguably the most profound of all the senses.

3. You spent a few years in the UK.  How was your experience there, compared to growing up in South Africa?  Has your experience there changed your view on optometry?

The UK was a fascinating experience and living abroad gives one perspective towards some of the most important social, economic and political factors at play both within a local and global context. My time there also allowed me to appreciate some of the unique joys of life in SA with the weather certainly being one of them!

4. You have achieved a lot in your career. What is your fondest memory?

My fondest memories definitely stem from the community work I was involved in on the Transnet Phelophepha train where groups of medical professionals serve impoverished communities throughout the year. The reality of South Africa's dual economy really came to life for me there and my reflections often bring me back to the realization that as a nation we still have a long way to go as far as equality is concerned.

5. 2020 has been a year to remember regarding the COVID_19 Pandemic. How has the pandemic effected you positively?

Without doubt, the fragility of life as we know it stands out and with that I have developed a deeper appreciation for the "simple" things in life.
