5 Minutes with Sports Physician – Dr Dhavina Naidoo
Give us an insight to your youth and background ?
I was born and raised in Durban, KZN. I grew up with my parents, grandparents and sister. I loved growing up in a big family. I went to an all girls high school and enjoyed playing outdoor and indoor hockey and soccer.
Why an interest in sport medicine and not any other medical speciality?
Sport has always been a big part of my life. Both my parents were avid sportsmen and my sister and I would frequently cheer them on from the sidelines. Eventually, we played many sports in school and I always loved the team environment. Unfortunately I was unable to further my career in Hockey due to my passion for medicine so I thought I would combine the two and I have been extremely lucky to do just that.
What legacy would you like to leave in the field on Sport Medicine?
I would like to see Sports Medicine become more inclusive of women and people of colour. I’d love to see it become less exclusive and available at grassroots level and a part of primary healthcare services.
You are WSMC’s latest member of the team. Did you previously know of the medical centre before joining and how has your introduction been this far?
Yes! I had definitively heard of the centre before. It’s been a very welcoming experience and I’ve loved every moment of it
Which is your dream sports team to work for and why?
It has always been my Dream to take the Proteas to a World Cup but ultimately it would be to work for Liverpool FC. My sister and I have been diehard fans all our lives.
