Grahamstown to Dubai with Mohammed Sonday – WSMC Consultant
Why did you study physiotherapy ?
I studied physiotherapy as I always had an interest and passion for health & sports from a young age. The more I got involved in the profession, the more I enjoy it. It is amazing to see what small interventions can result in big changes in patient health care.
You grew up the beautiful city of Cape Town and found your way to Grahamstown. Explain your journey to the readers?
Like every other health professional, we get placed anywhere in the country for our community service year after graduating. I was placed in Grahamstown, a rural town of the Eastern Cape, with rich history of education, arts and culture. A huge culture shock moving from an established city such as Cape Town to a rural town, however a well established rural town. A good feeling of countryside living, no traffic and well balanced break away from the busy city life. However like most rural towns, lacks young professionals which incentivised to me stay a bit longer.
You are a very ambitious person. What are your goals and why would you motivate a scholar to study physiotherapy?
I have many goals, of which I am content with what I have achieved thus far. Set one goal at a time, of which is to hopefully finish my Masters Degree off this year! Physiotherapy, like any other career, is a long journey hence setting small goals and achieving one at a time will help build a sustainable career. Be sure you know what this profession entails, be prepared for a long journey and together all will have successful careers.
You have achieved a lot in your career. What is your fondest memory ?
I have yet to achieve a lot more, as it is a long career. Many good memories in Sri Lanka, of which we played at the iconic Galle and Pallekele stadiums. Working at St. Stithians Rugby festivals, seeing the best of high school rugby. Best memories are created with patients and colleagues along the way.
2020 has been a year to remember regarding the COVID_19 Pandemic. How has the pandemic effected you positively?
As I've spent more time at home, the pandemic has had a positive impact in speeding up progress on my Masters Degree! I've had a lot more time to catch up on administration at my practice, there's always administration! Such it has made me realize the value of time and how to better implement structures day to day. To top it off, fortunately a work opportunity in Dubai concludes my 2020 thanks to Wanderers Sports Medical Center, which is another chapter in this long career!
