The ICC T20 Cricket World Cup Experience with Richard Das Neves
You worked as a consultant for the Namibian Cricket Team. Tell us how did that come about ?
All happened really quickly. I was on pre season tour with the Multiply Titans in Namibia. Head Coach, Pierre De Bruyn approached me at breakfast one morning and wanted me to assist in a dual role of Biokineticist and assistant coach. What a great opportunity and very grateful to have lived out a dream of being at a world cup. I was fortunate enough to represent SA U19 at 2006 world cup in Sri Lanka and now to do the men's world cup as a coach was special.
What were your expectations going into the World Cup as an association nation ?
The team was quietly confident going into the world cup phase 1. The team had prepared really well winning 5 series in a row and 24 games out of 29 in the build up including beating the Titans and Knights, 2 domestic teams in South Africa. So confidence was high.
Namibia also knew the conditions fairly well having toured Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah before Including the qualifying 2 years earlier
Namibia ranked 19th in the world before the tournament started. Sri Lanka was always going to be tough but in hind sight it was great to start against them. It set the bar incredibly high and the bench mark moved from what the team thought was international standard. This gave us confidence to beat Netherlands and Ireland which are 2 teams ranked well above Namibia with Ireland being the first test playong Nation Namibia have beaten.
Reaching the super 12 was a dream. Deep down we all knew it was possible but to get over the line was fantastic for all involved!
What have been your take home learnings from your experience ?
My first experience of International cricket at the highest level has been a fantastic learning curve. I really enjoyed seeing how other teams go about their business and seeing that a one size fits all approach doesn't work at this level. Every team had a different dynamic, a different way of doing things but wow! To see the best in action and try and counteract it was a real experience.
Babar Azam, Rizwan, Afridi, Rauf from Pakistan, Williamson and my old mate Conway, Southern and Boult from New Zealand, Rashid Khan from Afghanistan, Sharma, Rahul, Bumrah, Jadeja and Ashwin from India. All world class performers and to see them go about their business from the opposition was just unreal.
Another great experience was Pakistan coming into our change room after the game. It showed great respect from their side and the sharing of information from all the teams was really special.
What has been the toughest experiences of the World Cup?
Toughest experience without a doubt would be bubble life. 45 days in a bubble is not for the feint hearted. Speaking to other teams and coaches where they have spent 4 weeks at home in the past year, that's not fun and can be a real mental challenge for all involved. Bubble life is simply not sustainable in my opinion.
On the cricket front, each game was an opportunity, and although very challenging, it was great experience for a relatively young side and one that they will only grow from for next years tournament in Australia.
