WSMC Running Shoe Drive

The Wanderers Sports Medical Centre, recently began an initiative to collect old running shoes. It is social responsibility and community building drive led by WSMC Ambassador and South African Sprint Queen, Alyssa Conley.

The aim behind this drive, is to assist the less fortunate with old running shoes, that still have “kilometers” in them. Many clients/patients and friends of WSMC, have dropped off their old running shoes, with the aim of helping runners achieve their dreams.

Over the last 3 months, WSMC have managed to collect 52 pairs of shoes. The goal, is to now distribute shoes to athletes and clubs that are deserving.

Alyssa Conley, is currently the South African Senior Women’s Champion, in the 100m and 200m and trains at the University of Johannesburg, under the guidance of Morne’ Nagel. Her Medical Team, includes WSMC Sports Physician Dr Lervasen Pillay, WSMC Physiotherapists Ziyaad Mohamed and Craig Govender and Simone’ Conley from Conley Biokinetictists. She understands the importance of having a strong support system, as well as having good shoes to train in. Due to her commitment to her sport and her professional her has been granted with a sponsorship with Nike.

It is our endeavor to keep the hopes and dreams of runners, who did not have the support around them, to assist in a small way. WSMC and Alyssa, aim to build a database of runners they help. The athletes who are helped will be monitored, in terms of their times.

We aim to further assist the athletes with new shoes as they improve their times and consistency in the particular event. Thus emphasizing the importance of training hard and working towards a goal.
