Why Biokinetics?

Biokinetics was the one discipline I could identify that could take what is done in other allied health therapies such as occupational therapy, and physiotherapy, and combine it in such a way as to enhance the function, form and the overall confidence of individuals who have difficulties in a multitude of areas. Most health and learning difficulties seen in children and adults stems from lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyle patterns which are very common in today’s world. I watched closely as I discharged patients from hospital and saw what made for successful and unscheduled recoveries after trauma and illness, and exercise and social interactions are very good predictors of good outcomes under these adverse types of experiences.

How does you background as a nurse assist in your practice?

I think that having been in nursing for 12 years has enhanced my clinical thinking patterns. This vast background that professional nurses developed enables them to empathize with clients struggles. Enabling clients to make decisions based on discussion of diagnosis and setting realistic achievable goals for clients. This skill transfers into Biokinetics as a long-term rehabilitation modality to which clients often come to as a last resort. Creating settings where people can be shown value in small gains that can make a big difference to physical, sporting and health goals.

How can biokinetics assist pregnant women?

Pregnancy is a normal occurence in a woman's life. Pregnancies alter the physiology and biomechanics of a person. These changes can cause pain, discomfort, altered body perceptions and this may result in injury. Biokinetics can enhance the experience of pregnancy, reduce delivery complications ensuring positive outcomes for women and their new babies. Post pregnancy exercise promotes a healthy lifestyle for both mother and baby. Mothers who exercise with their babies promote motor development in the babies and are more likely to have children that enjoy physical pursuits

What do you enjoy most about Biokinetics?

The people I work with and the people I have met as clients can really make my day. It is the small gains that people make on their fitness journeys’ that accumulate into an awe-inspiring whole that keeps me motivated to continue to do better. Each person adds a little bit more to who I am and who I will be by making me challange the way I see and do things in my daily life.

Who is Janine outside of the practice?

Outside of the practice I am a wife to a corporate man and mother of two young adult menthe men in my life keep me busy doing a myriad of unusual and creative things. I participate in both running and cycling events on a regular basis just to ensure that I practice what I do every day at work.
